Our Story

The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) of the United States is a nonprofit veterans' service organization for veterans and military service members from the active, guard, and reserve forces. The VFW began in 1899 when veterans of the Spanish-American War (1898) and the Philippine Insurrection (1899-1902) founded local organizations to secure rights and benefits for their service. Many arrived home wounded or sick. The lack of medical care or pension for them conducted some of these veterans to band together and form organizations that would eventually become known as the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States.

After chapters were formed in Ohio, Colorado and Pennsylvania, the movement quickly gained momentum. Today, membership stands at nearly 1.7 million members of the VFW and its Auxiliary.

VFW Post 3838 Honor Guard

The Honor Guard has the duty and honor to preside at funerals for fallen comrades, perform duties at schools, churches, or events. The Honor Guard post the colors for meetings and functions within the community as well as Post functions.

The Honor Guard needs more members to join. You do not have to be retired to be a member of the Honor Guard. You will be trained by members who have been in the Honor Guard for years. The VFW member is provided a complete uniform at no cost including shirt, pants, coat, hat, shoes, and gloves.

There is so much pride in serving on the Color Guard. If interested, please contact Melvin Kuehle at 573-275-9612.
